Yesterday evening, the house I grew up in burned.
My aunt and her husband, my cousin and her husband, their three children, and their cats and dogs are now homeless.  Luckily fate smiled enough to spare their lives and health, though their possessions were all lost.  However, tonight they can't go home again.
My mother's parents bought the house in the late 1960's.  My parents and I lived there along with my grandparents.  My aunt and cousin lived there for a few years too when I was a child.  I haven't been there in over four years.  I haven't lived in that house for sixteen years.  That structure has not been my "home" for almost two decades.  Still I feel a loss.  I grieve for my family and all they've lost.  Things are just things, but some things bear the full weight of memory and time.  Photos, heirlooms, even the floors that so many feet have tread.  Spaces have a way to record the events that happen within them, and can speak to us if we care to listen.
In some ways I envied my cousin's children, because they were repeating my childhood.
I feel helpless to them a thousand miles away.  I can't shelter them.  I can't give them clothing or food.  I can only offer my prayers and my compassion.
Perhaps by acting within our everyday world, by aiding those around us who need help, we can spread hope and love that it may find others who need it, even a thousand miles away.

Wow, am I late in posting!

On Saturday January 16, All One Yoga held their "New Year New You" green living event.  It was a great turnout.  Lots of familiar faces, and lots of new faces.  Congratulations to Amy Likins for all her efforts!

The day ended with a special yoga class.  Tammy Binkley, Adrienne McGeehee, Amy Likins, and I took turns leading the class.  It was fun, and really fostered the idea of yoga bringing people together.

Tammy Binkley is heading a fundraising effort throughout this year.  It is part of "Off the Mat, Into the World."  This year the charity has chosen to help children in South Africa who have been affected by HIV and AIDS.  All One Yoga & Wellness is partnering with Tammy February 27, holding a yogathon to raise money.  If you are interested in participating, or in sponsoring someone, please contact Amy at All One Yoga.

It was good to be back at PAWS today for doga.  Although it pains me to see so many wonderful animals waiting to be loved, I try to do my tiny part to make their world more joyful.

My partner today was Luna.  She is an aussie mix according to her paperwork, but I believe she's greyhound, maybe german shorthaired pointer mix.  What a joyful soul!  Every dog I have had the pleasure of knowing responds to doga differently.  Luna was the most obviously affected by energy changes I've seen.  She struck me as needing to let her inner light shine.  While our practice opened our heart energy, she was interested and interactive.  Whenever our practice shifted to a settling energy, she became impatient - whining and straining at her lead.  Luna is a girl who will thrive with a joyful family.  Her name really should be Sunny (or maybe Surya).

Another BIG thanks to Tricia Bryant for featuring doga in the latest PAWS email newsletter

I will be back at PAWS this Thursday January 7 at 9am for shelter doga.  If you've ever wondered what doga is all about, or if you've been looking for a way to make a difference, please come join me!

I read an article in the Northwest Florida Daily News today that lifted my spirits.  A local man, Mark Rankin, chose to give a little time to save some lives.  He is a pilot, and he flew from Destin to Georgia to bring back a group of dogs who were facing death because their shelter was closing.  You can read the article here

We should all wish to make a difference like this!
